Natural Vegetative Propagation

Propagation through Stems:














  1.  Bulbs:
  • Underground Stem
  • Store Food
  • Surrounded by Thick & Fleshy Scale Leaves
  • When Bulb is cut in half, layers are obtained
  • Shoots – From Buds on top of base
  • Roots – From Buds under base of bulbs
  • Examples: Tulips, Onions and Lilies


































2. Corms:

  • Swollen underground stems
  • Stored food
  • Scale Leaves
  • Nodes are the points from which buds, leaves, twigs originate
  • When Corm is cut in half, Solid mass obtained
  • Upper buds at top of corm – Grow Shoots
  • Lower buds at base – Grow adventitious roots
  • Examples: Dasheen (Arvi) and Garlic


















3. Rhizomes:

  • Underground Stems
  • Scale Leaves Prominent
  • Horizontal Stems
  • Enlarged nodes on stem giving rise to buds, leaves etc.
  • Buds on upper surface – Shoots
  • Buds on lower surface – Adventitious Roots
  • Examples: Ginger, Ferns and water lilies.



























4. Stem Tubers:

  • Enlarged Rhizomes
  • Buds called EYES
  • Aggregations of buds in the form of “eyes”
  • Store food
  • Upper buds – Shoots
  • Lower buds – Roots
  • Examples: Potatoes and yams



























 5. Suckers:

  • Lateral Stems close to ground (Not too deep)
  • Grows underground laterally for some distance and then turns up to produce new plant.
  • Buds and Nodes
























Propagation through Leaves:

  • Bryophyllum
  • Fleshy leaves
  • Adventitious bud along margins of leaves having notches
  • Buds grow into new plant-lets and roots
